DIGI COUPON and some CLARIFICATION

saturated canary digi

There are armfuls of lovely people in the craft world.  Some of the sweetest people I've ever met, I have come across through drawing stamps.  But even though there is a huge majority of crafters/stampers who make this community something special, there is always a handful that can turn that upside down.

I want to explain my DT requirements.
My list of rules is super short.  I only have one:).
I will not allow my team members to work with the stamps of artists who are infamous in Stamp Out.
I do not feel like that decision needs to be defended; however, twice in two weeks my name has been dragged through the mud either on Facebook or in card forums because of that choice.  Most artists who actually value their art and care about their reputation have that same DT requirement.

Today I woke up to a forum post that makes my stomach turn.

"Patches the Fairy" was given to a popular Dutch card club to be distributed by the leader of the club for a week to the members there~ for FREE.  I have worked with this stamper for two years, giving her 4 different digital stamps to distribute to her members as described above.  I drew the characters she asked for, and I even redrew one because she did not like the original.  She also received over 40 free digital stamps while on a Dutch SC design team (which is now shut down).

Recently, she began to use and promote the work of an artist who I have had major issues with since September of 2011.  This artist continues to sell artwork that is, at the very least, overly inspired by the artwork of someone else and therefore, questionably "original".  I do not wish to be associated with people who promote the work of someone like that, so I made this very clear to her before giving her "Patches" to give freely to her club members.

This week, while giving away my free digi, she posted two different projects using this woman's artwork.

I understand that giving her this digi to distribute does not fall under the definition of a "Design Team" member...However, I believe that the way we worked together over the last two years warrants that she adhere to my DT requirements.  I take a huge hit in sales, while she gains members.  That is the nature of our work together, but I have known her for so long that I was happy to do this for her.  I did not think it was too much to ask to refrain from any artist who has a spotty history in this business.

The card club forum's post today is both untrue and hurtful (as are the running list of mean-hearted comments):

"I found it necessary to remove .. everything that has to do with Krista and her digi's, the club I will spare you the details but I can not and will not continue to work with someone who thinks they can put everything into her hand and can tell me what I can and can not colorize and what I can put on my club ... and then another will threaten me .... me too while I have done everything to its rules and wishes..."
(It is a little difficult to read due to translation into English)

It is disgusting to even have to approach this.  For the second time this month I have dealt with this sort of thing.

~I did not threaten.  However, I did require that the background she was using for the card club (my Shannon stamp) be immediately removed.  She never had my permission to use my artwork that way; so if left up, would be viewed as an illegal use of my artwork for her site promotion without license to do so.
~I have one rule.  Which she blatantly broke while handing out my artwork for free.  I am pretty sure, actually, that I was the one adhering to her rules and wishes while she chose to take advantage of both the popularity of my stamps and the increase in traffic to her site because of them.
~Finally, many of these members (including the club leader) are still choosing to use my free digi but withholding the link to my shop and blog.

There seems to be a growing trend where stampers willingly choose to turn a blind eye to the artists they know have issues with originality.  I am not on a crusade to fix that; however, I will not work with those crafters who do so.  Period.

I choose not to run my business from a money-making standpoint.  Granted, I am hugely thankful for my customers and followers and each order received.  But my focus is business longevity and future goals that are completely outside the world of stamping.  I will not risk my brand and business on people who have no moral compass or who falsify a situation without discretion.  I am not here to boost numbers artificially or work with every stamper in hopes of gaining popularity.   I care more about the authenticity of my product then I do about how widespread it is being used.  So, if it means closing down a whole SC blog or never being promoted on a popular card club, I am totally fine with that.  It really has no effect on my life.

My intent is not to be cavalier with my followers or sales, but I choose to strive for things outside of popularity and money.  I have made bad business choices because of it, sure:).  I am not very business- minded.  But I do know where I want to go and my road getting there does not involve compromising on my standards.

I am going to put out a guest DT call mid July.
Please understand my requirements if you choose to enter the call.
Also, please be aware that the artists you choose to promote have a significant impact on your own reputation.  Stamp artists have the right to deny anyone the privilege of serving on their DT in light of that.  It is not something we should be put in the position of defending.

And since you made it through all that crap:), I have Patches the Fairy in shop with a coupon code.
You can get her for half price using FAIRYLOVE at checkout (enter AFTER all the Paypal screens:)...

  2. Just sending you a big hug and am so sorry this has happened. It is getting harder and harder as a digi stamp consumer to know who is real or not. I try my best to only support original artists...once I find out otherwise I cease using the other artists work immediately.
Anyway, more hugs to you and I hope that more people wake up and realize the right thing to do. Thanks for the code, will be using it later today!

  3. So sorry you've had to face this. As you say and know most crafters are genuine nice people who are amazingly grateful for you sharing your talent. It's such a shame when a few bad apples can leave a sour taste in everyone's mouths.

    Sending you giant hugs.

  4. Oh dear.
I can totally understand were you are coming from.
Your images are lovely and are all your own work so of course people should follow your rules while using them.
Try not to let the actions of a few bring you down.

  9. Krista, I adore your work and feel terrible that you have had to endure the crap you have. I'm glad you realize not every stamper out there is like this! I have over 45 of your digital images ( told you I adore your work) and would never do anything to knowingly hurt you! Thank you for being so generous with your freebies and discounts! Your real fans appreciate it!

  10. This kind of thing is getting crazy and they try to cover up their guilt by making you out to be the bad guy. It's very sad. I totally think you have the right to ask them to refrain from using that art work while promoting yours.

  11. I think your rule is fair and square. Keep up the good work.

  12. How awful! It is common knowledge that you do not redistribute an artist's work. That is sad that there are people like this among a wonderful group of crafters and artists.

  15. It is sad to see this in the digital stamping world. Lots of ppl will continue to do it and they won't stop. You are right, you have to do what's best for you. I feel sorry for that person who blamed you! She should apologize and give you all the rights that you, as the true artist, should receive. Thank you for still being sweet to us with your awesome coupon. Big hugs to you Krista!

I don't like such an attitude to an artist. And especially an artist like you. Your work is fantastic and I think it is normal to have some rules in your DT.

  35. Krista, I know what you're talking about! I'm Dutch, I know the club, I stopped being a member 5 years ago, because I didn't like the owner of that club, if you know what I mean!

It was everywhere on Facebook that those ladies stopped with the SC Dutch Challenge blog a few weeks ago, and the very next day they were so enthusiastic about the work of another ''artist'' and I thought: How dare you???

I'm sure you can read a lot ''between the lines'', so I won't say more than I said, except that I understand you so well! hugs from Holland!

People really do take advantage sometimes and then act like they are the victims. Continue to protect your work and maintain your artistic integrity. Your real fans are right behind you all the way.

  44. So so sorry to hear that you are having to put up with such nonsense and crap. It's hard to understand anyone who would want to be so blatantly deceitful. You are quite right in the actions you have taken against this or any individial.

Do they not realise what damage they are doing - what gives them the right to behave in this manner. Nothing. Nothing gives them the right. They are dishonest individuals.

I hope that this is the end of it and you don't have to put up with any crap - carry on fighting - please don't give in.

  46. I have no problem with your DT requirement--I support it fully! However, it would be good to know which "artists" are infamous in Stamp Out, so that I do not use them in the future--just from a personal standpoint.
There is one that I bought from, until I heard that she had copied the basic image from another artist, so I deleted the images I had purchased. I had made one card with one of her images, which I never published, due to my own standards.
Would you please send me a list of these artists, so that I know not to use their images? I would really appreciate it.
I admire your work greatly. Thank you for the free and reduced-price images you do offer! This new one is another darling one.

  49. Krista wrapping u up in Big Hugs. My hart was wavy as I read this!! I think what hurt most of all is because it comes from someone that u have had a long standing relationship with . As stampede and crafters it is up to us to respect the work if the Artist and their craft. It's the same reason why we " water mark" our own cards and projects because we don't want any one else taken credit for the hard work we put into it!!

  50. Standing with you 100% Krista, I know this club but gladly I am no longer member there :). I respect you artists that create for us, and I make sure I always buy my images direct from your sites.

In fact there is a company I like the look of, but I am unsure as to whether they are good or bad so have not brought anything.

  56. So unless a digi company is listed as a Participating Company on the Stamp Out Stamp Theft blog (a blog that has not been updated since November 2011), you will deny anyone using their "non-approved images" from joining your DT? This is not a very large list of digi companies. I think if this is the case, this list of companies needs to be current. And when a situation arises, Company names and website should be used instead of all this secrecy. How is a crafter supposed to know if they are promoting a company that is not respecting copyrights? Not all of us follow the drama that goes on in the crafting world.

  84. So sorry to hear about all your troubles, Krista. I don't know who you're talking about and I have never heard of the site you mentioned but I think most of us try very hard not to knowingly support fraudulent artists. There are only a handful of artists that I do support regularly and if any of them lend or give their work to the unscrupulous site you speak of, I am not aware of it. I believe the work of those whose digi designs I use to be original as I have not seen any proof to the contrary. I wish you continued success and your family all the best. Hopefully, this situation will right itself in the long run.

  92. Krista, I agree with you 100% and as a business stand point I would suggest taking the time and money to copyright your work or trademark it, I know that seems so awful to have to do that but it is the only way to STAMP IT OUT and then people will have to think twice about using your work when they are not to as this will have legal implications............ It would be awful if the whole community has to suffer because of a few...........

    ReplyDelete
  93. Like some of the others, I would also like to know who to steer clear of. I understand that it wouldn't be good for you to just *say* "so and so is a cheat", but can we assume that if they don't have the Stamp Out logo displayed that there are questionable practices?
No matter what, I support your stance! It makes perfect sense to me - why should your gorgeous art carry them??

  102. Krista, I am not a particular fan of this genre of digi-art but even I can say that your execution of your art is top quality. Moreover, I agree with every word you have written in your piece and if I were at all into this genre would be begging for a place on your DT purely to be associated with a person of such high moral standards.
There will always be thieves, whether of physical or intellectual property but there are few more badly affected and damaged than the digi-artist. We're considered fair game as 'it's only a drawing' - well, I'm sorry, if you take a free copy of a digital image, that STILL makes YOU a thief!

  103. When did society become so immoral? not only fraudulent artists but individuals who go out of their way to cause distress, hurt and mischief because it's the only defence they know to being caught out! Krista, you have every right to stand by your rule and i'm so sorry to hear about all this anguish a second time in so few days, you're in my payers. Continue to hold your head high and try to continue that most of us are 100% behind you and all genuine stamp artists.

It had been voiced, and here I add my own, that it would be good to have access to a list of known 'bad eggs'. Whilst I only buy from 4 digi companies myself, I would happily spread the need on my blog and try to help educate and eradicate this issue.

  107. I have to tell you this situation is why I so rarely use digitals and prefer to buy rubber or acrylic stamps. I maybe have 10 digis all purchased across the internet. But I have yet to use them because I don't know if putting them on my blog will violate anything even as a finished card. I hate the theft going on webwide. The ethics behind these sort of thefts leave me shaking my head and wondering if this sort of thing (almost petty why people steal them) is just the drop in the bucket of why people steal or whatever. I hope things get better for you Krista. I would love to slap at the very least those who do this to artists.

    1. That sounds fabulous Hilde. Yours would be a challenge blog I and I'm sure many other crafters would love to support. So do tell us the name! It's tricky when some of the challenge blogs seem to have great artists supporting them and then occasionally those that are questionable. So knowing you will only allow 'true' artists to support the challenge is reassuring. Good luck with that! Wends x

Like some of the other ladies, it is sometimes hard to know at this point which images are the original. Can we somehow see which artists are a part of Stamp Out? That way we would know who the "good guys" are? Just don't want to offend a great artist by unknowingly using a rip off image.

  124. You are clearly very hurt by this and Im so sorry for you because of that. Ive a family business (not my craft business) with my mum and we too have made these mistakes and more than once. I think it didn't even occur to us that other people didn't think like we did. These people give all the appearance of thinking as you do and being good honest honourable people while all the time are actually just taking advantage. We spent some time thinking did this make us stupid, or not business enough or should we change our giving natures, esp as it happened more than once, but came to the conclusion after some real soul searching that, although obviously we have to be more sensible in the future, (ie whoever it is, however nice etc, have a written agreement for example),
that we didn't want these few to spoil who we were to the majority and actually even ourselves. I think for us it was less about the loss of any money or anything business that was so upsetting but it was this realisation that not everybody is nice and we are not all playing this game by the same rules as it were. But I truly believe that what goes around comes around. So please don't allow her and her 'lemmings' to change you or bring you down, let your good nature be the light in her darkness. I guess this might be one of those situations when The Lord is getting you to try out this 'loving your enemy' thing! And lastly i just want to say you only have look at all these comments to see how many people care about YOU, not your product not your brand but you, yourself. You give not only your art but of yourself and that is precious and something no one can take from you. God bless :-)

  125. Krista, I know how difficult it must have been to write this post as I know you don't enjoy having to make these types of issues public. And I'm enraged for you that your character is being defamed on these sites.

Having meet you personally and knowing how important your illustrations are to your heart, it breaks my heart that there are people out there greedy enough to profit off of poor quality "copies" of not just your work, but of other fine artists too.

As for the list that everyone wants you to make... I for one appreciate you taking the high road and not calling out names. Let an organization like Stamp Out do that with your backing.

And anyone wanting to "know" what images are copies... if you are out there looking and you say, "Wow... that reminds me of a SC" or "There is a SC image that is so similar." (or other company's images)... then it's a poor imitation and you should steer clear. And if in doubt, check with the artist (who you think might be copied.)

Last point, this is YOUR DT... and you can make any darn rules you want and you should NEVER have to justify them. Anyone having issues with your requirements aren't the type of person you want on your team anyway.

Hugs to you and know you have the support and love of your family, friends and a HUGE number of stampers!

  129. Krista, First and foremost might say that you NEVER have to explain why you do what you do but the fact that you did, I respect you for that. I have asked many times about who these artist are as I will not support anyone that is stealing images. I bought some images from someone that I suspected but asked a very respected person in the business and she defended this person so I bought some of her images. I am still on shaky ground with them but I would love to have a list of these people. Somewhere I did have a very short list of people a few years ago but I think they should be exposed so that all of us can make up our own minds if we want to be a part of there ethics or not. I am so sorry that you have to go through this mess and I know so many of you talented ladies have to go through this but it is good to know that MOST of us follow the rules and respect the work put into these images that you do for US and do not want to disrespect you in any way. If there is a way to collect the names of these people, please put it out there for all of us to see.. We will always stand with the honest illustrators/artists so no one has to worry about losing any of their true followers.

  159. I 100% agree with your stance. The sooner people realise the amount of hard work each piece of art takes the sooner I hope they'll stop stealing images. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen. I support the Stamp it out blog and facebook page and completely understand your DT requirement. I look forward to hearing about the new ideas for the stamp it out blog.

Thank you for the coupon. I, of course, couldn't resist! :)

  160. I am so sad to read the troubles you are having! I posted a response to another going up above and will repeat here. You are the sites and artists to avoid? I don't want to use anything that is bad or stolen!!

  163. Oh my dear friend, I am so saddened and distressed to read this and see what this is doing to you, and the fact that you are still having to deal with this all this time. As you know I also know about this struggle and past struggles with this so called 'artist' and she is nothing but a copycat and despicable in my book. You are one of the sweetest, easy going people I know and a pleasure to work with, which is what I have been doing for over a year now. I cannot call you a boss as you are far more like a best friend, best buddy, and this is nothing other than theft and scandalous slander of a lovely lady, whom does not deserve any of this, please know that you are not alone and if you need anything from me, do not hesitate to contact me Krista hun. Love to you and chat soon xxx

  166. Sending you lots of love and hugs! You deserve better than the treatment from this person. I believe you are one amazing lady who has been blessed from the man upstairs with an awesome artistic talent. Thank you for sharing it with all of us and the discounts and freebies.

  167. Krista,
I think from the email comments that you can see that you are very highly thought of. Your artwork is incredible and I hope that you continue to share with all of us: your true fans and supporters. It's a shame that a few rotten people can have such an enormous effect on the really lovely people; like yourself! Please know that you are cared for by many and that you bless us each time you share from your heart!

  169. You go Girl! Fight for what is right! It is sad we run into this type of people in the world and they manage to inflict pain into our corner. But don't let them push you into a corner and/or make you feel bad about who/what you are and what you believe in!

  170. I am so sorry that you had to deal with all that. You sound like you have wonderful morals and values in dealing with these types of issues and I totally agree with your actions, hugz and can't wait to apply for the guest dt

  173. Way to stick to your guns! You have to defend your own conscious! I would hope that if I should ever use anyone's images that is not an honest crafter; someone would let me know so I could remove the images from my files. Theft is theft regardless of the situation!

Thank you for the discounts and freebies you generously share with all of us! I love your work and will continue to support your art whenever possible!

    Hugs,

  175. I haven't read all these many comments but I hope they are all as positive as the ones I have read.

I admire your work and enjoy using your images. I have purchased a few but have also received a few on the DT for Stampin' for the Weekend. I greatly appreciate that you sponsor us and that you gift the DT an image of our choice = very generous of you - thank you.

I am sorry that you've had a bad experience with that group. I hope that all you do from here on out works out the way you expect.

  176. So sorry to hear about what happened Krista, hope you stay strong and keep the SC blog and challenge blog going. When I first saw the "other" artist's work, I thought they look much like your work. I will definitely boycut all websites using her work.
So stay calm and carry on. God bless you Krista.

  178. Sorry you are dealing with this. I too feel that people turn a blind eye to things and it's just not right.
Your images are darling and I know it can be quite frustrating when you see other artist "inspired" by your work. I've had it done to me MANY times. Keep your chin up. Hugs!!

  181. This is so sad. Do these people not realize that killing business talented artists? I have seen those images on Pinterestand have repported a lot of them, to you, to Krista and other artists, and .I have left comments on a number of sites telling them they are illegally offering images that don't belong to them...... Is it possible that they don't know it's ilegal? I doubt...sometimes I think it's very difficult to know which artist are a copycat or a "orginal" one? I'll do anything to support you, Mo, Magnolia ..Big hugs from Ellen..and take good care, sweet Krista♥

  183. So horrible girl! Some people just have no morals or ethics. I see an ever increasing trend of people thinking they can do whatever they want without adhering to the artist's rules. People say mean and hateful things in the beginning but when that other person turns on them their real character and motive come to light! Stand firm in your beliefs. There will always be people who do wrong but you know you can raise your head high because you stood firm on what's right! These are your stamps and your images. You are allowed to make rules that protect you and your work. If they don't want to follow them then don't take the images. Simple as that! They don't have to go around saying mean and hateful things because they didn't get their way. Hopefully one day they grow up and start acting like responsible and respectful adults instead of selfish little children.

    Hugs to you
